How to Move a Refrigerator with Surface Protection

Moving a refrigerator can be a daunting task, especially when you want to protect your floors and walls from scratches, dents, and other potential damage. Whether you’re moving to a new home or simply rearranging your kitchen, using surface protection products can make the process smoother and safer.   

1. Gather Materials

Before moving anything, make sure you have all the necessary materials to move a heavy refrigerator. We recommend gathering the essentials:    

• Heavy-Duty Surface Protectors such as Neo Shield, Builder Board or Carpet Film.  
• Furniture sliders  
• Appliance dolly  
• Packing tape  
• Measuring tape  
• Moving blankets  
• Door jamb protectors 

In addition to gathering materials, prepare your appliance. To avoid food and beverages from falling out or spoiling we recommend removing everything from the fridge. Place food in a cooler or back up fridge to keep food safe. In addition to removing the food, it’s a good idea to remove shelving and drawers to prevent damage.  

2. Protect Your Surfaces  

Measure your fridge and determine where and what route you’ll be moving the heavy appliance on. Next, prepare your floors.  

• For hardwood surfaces we recommend installing Surface Shields’ Builder Board or Neo Shield. Builder Board will protect floors from scratches and some impacts. Neo Shield is designed with neoprene, so it has a bit more cushion.  

• If your route includes carpeted surfaces, make sure to install carpet film. Carpet Shield is puncture resistant and can withstand heavy foot traffic.  

• Avoid damaging door frames with a door jamb protector. This surface protector will prevent costly dings and scratches when moving your fridge. 

• Lastly, protect your fridge. Apply a hard surface film, or wrap and secure your appliance with a moving blanket to prevent damage. Secure into place with tape or bungee cords. 

3. Move the Refrigerator & Reinstall  

Save your back and utilize furniture sliders or a dolly to help slide the fridge across the floor. Carefully move the refrigerator along the protected path. Take your time, and make sure to avoid sharp turns or sudden movements that could cause the refrigerator to tip over.  

Once you’ve moved the refrigerator to its new location, carefully remove the furniture sliders, dolly and moving blankets. Position the refrigerator where you want it and reconnect any water lines. Plug it back in and allow it to cool before replacing the shelves and food.
